Hair can be your best – or your worst- asset, your best friend or worst enemy.

And according to scientists at Bonn and Düsseldorf Universities, there’s hope for those who view it as their worst enemy.  An important hair-loss gene has been uncovered. The researchers investigated over 500,000 positions in the human genome, and found a gene variant which occurs clearly more frequently in bald men than in control persons. 

If you or – if you’re a stylist – your clients, have little need for high-end hair trimming tools like yoko scissors, professional shears, expensive products etc., because they, well, just have very little hair, this could be an answer as to why. 

These are the same scientist that characterized the first hair-loss gene as being inherited through the maternal line, and explained why hair-loss in men often reflects that of their maternal grandfathers. This new gene, however, focuses on the gene’s relationship between father and son, and may explain similarities in cranial hair growth betweenthe two. This new study reveals that there is the potention for the son being bald – or exhibiting similar hair loss patterns – if his father is also bald.

This is only the second region of the genome that can definitely be associated with premature hair-loss, and hopefully it leads to a breakthrough in hair growth technology.

“We are now trying to discover the role played by this genomic region in hair-growth”, says Dr. Felix Brockschmidt of Bonn University. “Only then will we know whether we on the right track for new forms of therapy for male hair-loss”.

The need for professional shears, didn’t even come into play with  John Simpson’s award-winning hair series. Simpson, of Lewis Salon traded created this look, above, as one of several in a colo collection that he said allowed him to re–igninte his creativity. Simpson recently won the Best Haircolor award from the Professional Beauty Association during the 19th annual North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) – the color at left is from his award-winning collection, in which he wove different “stories” of texture and color.

Bundles adds that a great mother-daughter bonding opportunity is when the mother is doing their daughter’s hair – or even sometimes vice versa.

Walker, born Sarah Breedlove Walker, is the historic entrepreneur who made a name for herself selling hair care products for African American woman. Not only is Walker recorded as the first African-American self-made female millionaire but also the first self-made female millionaire in American history, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

You don’t even need professional shears to follow the latest trend. According to one stylist, your best bet is to just let hair go, and see what happens. Of course, that can be easier said than done for some people! After all, getting the perfect “undone” look can actually involve lots of prep time!

“People are so worried about getting every single piece of hair in the right place that it ends up looking old lady instead of young and hip,” says Kristie Pellegrino, a stylist Louie Salon in San Francisco, California. “Hair is supposed to look messy and natural, not at all perfect.”

All of the latest mussy styles – perfect for a night out, date night, or even to take you from the office to the bar – require back-combing, which involves holding a small section of hair 90 degrees off the scalp. Then using a fine-toothed comb,comb down the hair shaft beginning mid-length. Pellegrino says “Do this in a repeated motion to create a little nest that looks like one of those troll dolls.”

There’s a phrase you probably never guessed you’d hear when describing hair you’d love to have. But that’s the way syles go. If you’re not ready to, essentially tease your hair, just remember that messy tresses are in. Don’t over style, don’t over blow dry and don’t think every strand has to be in perfect place!
