Repetitive Strain Injury – Wh...

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a topic that many hairdressers are familiar with. Many stylists make great careers in the hair industry but they are also exposed to health hazards if they are not careful.

Stylists have to work in salons for long hours while standing on their feet. Their hands are most critical as they help them make a living! The repetitive movement and regular strain on hands causes Repetitive Strain Injury. RSI has now been extended to include problems caused by static posture as well.

Other hazards which can risk a hairstylist’s health are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) and Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS).

CTS is a common disorder that affects the hand and wrist. It affects stylists because of repetitive usage of hair scissors and other barbering tools. In Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, the median nerve is compressed, causing changes in sensation, pain, and limiting the full use of the hand.

Occupational Overuse Syndrome develops over a period of time and unlike CTS it may indicate an injury, characterized by discomfort or persistent pain in muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. It occurs because of the repetitive strong movements and constrained postures.

Even if you have been in the hairdressing business for a short time, you might have experienced occasional pain in your wrists. This happens either due to holding hairdressing scissors in the wrong position or due to usage of low quality hair shears. Therefore, investing in good quality hairdressing shears is one way to avoid Repetitive Strain Injury.

Cosmetology education is evolving into the most preferred courses for students today. Ivan aka ClipperGuy is the world’s fastest haircutter who is currently serving as the Director of Education and Training at Andis Company. He was featured on the Cutting Edge Hair Show, which is the only online TV and video education series providing cosmetology education.

Ivan has popularized clipper cutting in the industry and is famously known as ClipperGuy. He is appearing on TLC’s Designing Spaces to demonstrate three cuts that will put style into your technique.

Ivan Zoot aka ClipperGuy is the world’s fastest haircutter who has three amazing world records to his credit. He currently is the Director of Education and Training at Andis Company with 15 years experience as an Andis educator. During his stint in the hair industry, Ivan has become a champion stylist and has also taken his knowledge to the product side of the business, becoming a hair care product manufacturer and inventing many salon tools.

Ivan currently holds three Guinness world records in haircutting:

Fastest single haircut (55 seconds)

Most haircuts in 1 hour (34)

Most haircuts in 24 hours (340)

Ivan Zoot created these records on August 22, 2008 at Rooster’s Men’s Grooming Center in Austin, Texas. He completely obliterated the previous records as he beat each record by a significant margin. It’s amazing how Ivan stood behind the chair for 24 hours straight and never lost his drive or excitement.

We had featured Ivan Zoot on the Cutting Edge Hair Show, which is the only online TV and video education series providing cosmetology education.
